M3U, EPG and portals: IPTV playlist terms explained

Four terms that sound technical and turn out to be quite ordinary.

Anyone researching an IPTV M3U playlist hits the same handful of words. Here they are in plain language.

What is an M3U file?

A text file. A list. Each entry says: this channel is called X, it belongs to group Y, and its stream is at address Z. Nothing more. That plainness is exactly why almost every player can read one — the format has been around for decades and was never complicated to begin with.

What is an EPG?

The Electronic Programme Guide: the schedule. It usually arrives as a separate file and is what turns a bare channel name into "what is on now, and what follows". If the EPG is missing the channel still plays perfectly — you just lose the listings.

Playlist or portal?

MethodWhat you enterTypical for
M3U playlista single URLmost player apps
API / portal loginserver address, username, passwordpolished TV apps
Portal addressa portal URL in the device menuMAG-style boxes

All three arrive at the same content. Portal logins usually present a nicer interface with categories and search; a plain playlist is the most widely compatible option.

Why bitrate matters more than resolution

Resolution is how many pixels; bitrate is how much data describes them. A well-encoded 1080p stream at a healthy bitrate looks cleaner on the sofa than a higher resolution squeezed so hard it smears during fast motion. When comparing, ask about stability and bitrate, not just the number on the label.

And the legal side

Worth being clear aboutNeither an M3U file nor a player app is a problem in itself — both are neutral tools, used every day for entirely legitimate purposes. What matters is the content you access with them. Use only sources you are entitled to use, and respect the copyright rules in your country.

Summary

Behind the vocabulary sit three ordinary things: a list, a schedule, and a server that delivers the streams. Once those click into place, every setup guide on the internet becomes easy to follow.
